I grew up on a farm outside of Ripley, ON, where I gained experience working with poultry, beef, and horses. In the spring of 2022, I graduated from the University of Guelph with an Honour’s Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Biology. After taking various animal nutrition courses throughout my undergrad, I became truly passionate about this subject, and knew that I wanted to pursue a higher education in this field. In my fourth year, I volunteered in Dr. Anna Kate Shoveller’s lab, assisting Ph.D. student, Sydney Banton, with her thesis work on the effects of high protein, grain-free diets on cardiac health in dogs. During the summer before beginning my graduate degree, I was employed as a Research Assistant at Ontario Nutri Lab Inc., where I spent my time collecting digestibility and palatability data from dogs to test the performance of various pet food brands.
Recently, I completed my M.Sc. Candidate by coursework in Animal Nutrition and Metabolism under the supervision of Dr. Vern Osborne. In the fall of 2022, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for BIOL*1050 Biology of Plants and Animals in Managed Ecosystems, where I taught laboratories to 80+ students each week. The following semester, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for ANSC*4100 Applied Environmental Physiology and Animal Housing. The focus of my research involved creating a conceptual design for the delivery of targeted nutrients or pharmaceuticals, encapsulated in a water-based gel for neonates of domestic and companion animals. The goal of this design is to stimulate the oral mucosal immune system in neonates to enhance immunity, as well as to promote oral hygiene and an increased hydration status.
Outside of studying, you will find me riding my horse named Jenny, reading, volunteering at wildlife rehabilitation centres, or spending time with my cat, OJ.
