Dr. Angela Canovas is an OAC Chair in Phenomics and Systems Biology and Full Professor of Beef Cattle and Small Ruminants Genomics at University of Guelph, Department of Animal Biosciences and part of the Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL). Dr. Angela Canovas was born in Cordoba (Spain) and raised in Lleida, one of the most important agriculture region in Spain. In 2011, she completed her Ph.D. in Animal Breeding and Genetics at University of Lleida (Spain) obtaining several national and international awards such as from the International Society of Animal Genetics. During her Ph.D. studies she also had the opportunity of being a visiting student at University of Bristol (UK; 2008), Iowa State University (USA; 2009) and University of California-Davis (USA; 2010). After completing her Ph.D., she moved to University of California-Davis with Dr. Juan F. Medrano as a Fulbright Excellence post-doctoral researcher (2012-2015).
In June 2015, Dr. Canovas joined the Univerisity of Guelph as Assistant Professor of Beef Cattle and Small Ruminant Genomics at the Department of Animal Biosciences. After three years, in 2018 she got Tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. In 2022 she was promoted to OAC Research Chair and Full Professor. She is Associate Editor of Canadian Journal of Animal Science since 2016, Associate Editor of Frontiers in Livestock Genomics since 2015 and Associate Editor of Genome since 2017. In February 2021, she joined the Editorial Board of BMC Genomics and Frontiers in Genetics. Since 2015, Dr. Canovas is a member of several industry boards such as the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and AgSights and lead of several international committees. She has established productive collaborations with researchers and industry throughout Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Honduras, Italy, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain and USA.
She has published more than 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts in high-impact scientific journals, over 400 articles/conferences proceedings and over 75 invited talks at international conferences. Her current research program focusses on the field of animal Systems Biology combining the novel –OMICS technologies, statistical genomics and bioinformatics with further functional validation of regulatory target genes and causal mutations associated with economically important traits in livestock species such as feed efficiency, fertility, health, product quality and meat quality and carcass traits necessary to enhance and accelerate the genetic improvement and innovation in Canada’s cattle (beef and dairy), pig and sheep industries. She feels it is also very important to make a conscious effort to translate research achievements into instructional material, and sharing advancements with producers and other industry stakeholders in order to have more feedback between the different sectors of the beef cattle and sheep industries.
Dr. Canovas leads several research projects received from federal, provincial, and industrial granting agencies with budgets exceeding $8 million (funding received as a Principal Investigator) overseeing a team of over 18 graduate students and researchers. In recognition of her strong research record, she was awarded the prestigious Canadian Society of Animal Science (CSAS) "CSAS Young Research Scientist Award" at the ASAS-CSAS American Society of Animal Science annual meeting in Baltimore, USA (July, 2017), the UofG Research Excellence Award (January, 2020) and the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) "Early Career Achievement Award" in Madison, Wisconsin, USA (July 2020).
