We are happy to have Brian Van Doormaal, from Lactanet Canada, presenting for us on Friday, December 5th, 2025. This in-person seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST in ANNU 141 with the option to connect virtually via Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “Let’s Make A Deal”.
Speaker Biography: Brian Van Doormaal has dedicated his professional career of nearly 40 years involved in the genetic improvement of dairy cattle in Canada. Most significantly, he has been responsible for the development and delivery of genetic evaluation services since the creation of Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) over 30 years ago, which has been a key part of the service portfolio of Lactanet Canada since its establishment in June 2019. For his entire career, he has been a member of the Genetic Evaluation Board (GEB) and has also been involved in the allocation of industry funds aimed at supporting research in the area of genetic improvement of dairy cattle. He has been directly involved in the implementation of essentially all current genetic evaluation systems and services in Canada including genomic evaluations in 2009, Mastitis Resistance in 2014, Metabolic Disease Resistance in 2016, Hoof Health in December 2018, Feed Efficiency in April 2021, the world-first Methane Efficiency evaluations in April 2023 and Calf Health in 2025. He led the research, development and implementation in August 2015 of Pro$ as Canada's profit-based genetic selection index as well as the modernized LPI and its subindexes in April 2025. Since 2016, Brian has been the industry leader in the development and implementation of DairyTrace as Canada’s national dairy cattle traceability solution. Internationally, he was the Canadian representative to Interbull for 27 years and was the inaugural Chair of the DNA Working Group of ICAR for 8 years. In recognition of his significant contributions, Brian was awarded the Canadian Dairy Cattle Improvement Industry Distinction award in 2023 and the ICAR President's Award in 2016.
