CGIL Seminar - Unraveling rumen ecological shifts linked to the productivity and sustainability of dairy cattle

We are happy to have Dr. Hugo Monteiro, from the University of California Davis, presenting for us on Friday, November 14th, 2025. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “Unraveling rumen ecological shifts linked to the productivity and sustainability of dairy cattle”   

Speaker Biography: Dr. Hugo Monteiro is currently a Postdoc at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on host–microbiome interactions in ruminants, with an emphasis on how microbial and viral communities influence nutrient utilization, feed efficiency, and methane emissions in dairy cattle. He applies multi-omics and bioinformatics approaches, including dual RNA-sequencing, metagenomics, amplicon sequencing, and metabolomics, to uncover rumen ecological shifts and their impact on animal production and sustainability. Dr. Monteiro earned his Ph.D. in Animal Science at the University of Florida with a focus on modulating rumen fermentation. Beginning January 2026, he will join the Department of Animal Science at Cornell University as an Assistant Professor, where he will lead a program in ruminant microbiology that leverages bioinformatics and artificial intelligence to accelerate sustainability innovations.
