CGIL Seminar - Oral presentation / paper discussion by students from ANSC*6210: Principles of Selection in Animal Breeding course

Good afternoon CGIL,

We are happy to have with us Ella Dodd, Kelli Sokoloff, and Fatima Muhammad, Ph.D. and Master students at the University of Guelph, to present the CGIL Seminar on Friday, March 24th, 2023, as part of the course ANSC*6210: Principles of Selection in Animal Breeding. The hybrid seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST in person in room 141 and online on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams.

The title of the papers being presented are:
“Genetic component of sensitivity to heat stress for nonreturn rate of Brazilian Holstein cattle” [Ella Dodd]
"How Depressing Is Inbreeding? A Meta-Analysis of 30 Years of Research on the Effects of Inbreeding in Livestock" [Kelli Sokoloff]
"Genetic Diversity in the Italian Holstein Dairy Cattle Based on Pedigree and SNP Data Prior and After Genomic Selection" [Fatima Muhammad]

Speaker Biography:

- Ella Dodd is a current Ph.D. student at the University of Guelph working under the advisement of Dr. Christine Baes. Ella completed her Master’s in May 2022 at the University of Connecticut focusing on Quantitative Genetics and Animal Breeding under Dr. Breno Fragomeni. Ella’s current research interests are fertility traits, sustainability, and mitigating environmental impacts on livestock

- Kelli Sokoloff is a current MSc. coursework student being advised by Dr. Christine Baes at the Center for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL). In 2022, Kelli completed a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Guelph. Through this experience, she became interested in quantitative genetics using computational software and tools for genetic research and applications.

- Fatima Muhammad completed her BSc. in behavioral neuroscience and is presently a master’s student by coursework in Dr. Wendy Pearson’s lab. She is currently focused on investigating the comparability of heart rate of SET exercise treatments and the interactive effects of exercise and excessive nutrition in obese horses. In the future, she aims to diverge and explore future treatments for the control of methane emissions and feed efficiency in cattle.
