We are very pleased to have Dr. Manuel Juárez, a research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada and Dr. Stephanie Lam, a post-doctoral fellow at Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada, present a CGIL Seminar on Friday November 20th, 2020. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The title of the presentation is: “Intro to Livestock Phenomics: Integrating performance, carcass and meat quality data with genomics”.

Speaker Biographies:
Dr. Manuel Juárez completed his Ph.D. at the University of Seville (Spain) in Animal Production in 2007. Previously, he had completed his MBA at the International Business Centre (CEREM) and DVM at the University of Cordoba (Spain). During this time, he gained international experience from working in research labs in Italy (Istituto Sperimentale per la Zootecnia) and Ireland (TEAGASC), and working as a Veterinary and Production Manager in Finland. After his Ph.D., he worked for a goat producer association in southern Spain, developing a meat quality differentiation brand. In 2009, Dr. Juárez arrived to Canada as a PDF with AAFC and, two years later he became the lead Research Scientist to coordinate the Livestock Phenomics program, linking livestock genomics and phenotypical research, with a major focus on meat production. Using holistic approaches to evaluate the interactions between genetic and environmental factors, his research program has been able to quantify the relative contribution of these factors on animal performance, carcass and meat quality traits.
Working under the supervision of Dr. Juárez is Dr. Stephanie Lam, a PDF at AAFC. As some of you may recall, she finished her Ph.D. in February with CGIL. Her current projects involve researching the transition of muscle to meat using RNA-Seq, comparing technologies to measure meat quality and carcass traits, and studying factors influencing carcass cut-out composition.
Their research goals align with the AAFC Livestock Phenomics Program, which is to optimize livestock production systems to maximize profitability, while maintaining or enhancing carcass and meat quality.
