I am one of the coursework master students under the supervision of Dr. Tina Widowski. My current research focuses on how keel bone damage influences laying hens' welfare. I want to analyze different rearing systems' contributions to keel bone damages in laying hens. I am at the stage of developing my research plan. I would like to include the dissection of euthanized laying hens as a measurement to analyze keel bone damages. I will focus on other measurements related to keel bone damages later.
Past Research Experience
During my undergraduate research project (2013-2014), I produced cheap animal protein to feed fish fingerlings at the National Aquaculture Centre, Dambulla, Sri Lanka. The study aimed to find the cheap animal protein source from our local area and prepare the fish feed, including fish meal as an inferior animal protein source. I worked with universities and industries during my undergraduate research project, including the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, and the National Aquaculture Development Authority, Dambulla Sri Lanka.
My undergraduate research supervisors are Prof. A.R.S.B. Athaduda, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, Prof. B.C. Jayawardena, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and Mr.A.R.Mudaligae, Fish Genetic Specialist Unit, National Aquaculture Development Authority, Dambulla, Sri Lanka. My research paper title is “Fish meal incorporated fish feed preparation and feeding trials." In addition, I published an abstract of my research paper on the Second international conference on agriculture, aquaculture, and animal science 2015 held in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
I attended industrial training at the National Aquaculture Development Centre, Dambulla, Sri Lanka, in 2013 to develop skills related to the industrial approach in aquaculture. I participated in experiential learning with farming communities and their field to study their farming practices. For six months, I gathered experience related to farming activities and management practices in 2014. I presented my gathering via PowerPoint presentation and booklet.
