Education & Research Background

I received my undergraduate degree in Spring 2022 from the University of Guelph in the Bachelor of Bio-Resource Management (BBRM) program, majoring in Equine Management. During my undergraduate career, I served as Shadow Secretary and Communications Coordinator on the BBRM Student Council, where I helped to promote events and initiatives for our student body. Throughout my degree, I had the opportunity to participate in various projects that introduced me to the field of research and fueled my passion for equine nutrition and physiology. In the summer of 2021, I received a Summer Undergraduate Student Research Award under the supervision of Dr. Lee-Anne Huber, focusing on Feeding Strategies for Lactating Sows. This experience strengthened my knowledge of the research process and valuable lab skills. In my final undergraduate year, I completed AGR*4450 Research Project I under the guidance of Dr. Wendy Pearson, where I participated in the research project "The combination of trailer transport and exercise increases gastrointestinal permeability and markers of systemic inflammation in horses."

Current Research

I am beginning my MSc. by Coursework in Equine Nutrition under the guidance of Dr. Wendy Pearson. Dr. Pearson leads a collaborative lab that allows her students to play a role in various research projects, which I am privileged to be a part of. My current research will evaluate an oral joint care supplement in horses with IL-1-induced articular inflammation. This study will use a minimally invasive model of synovitis to display changes in naturally-occurring articular inflammation without causing lameness in the horse. This research will give options to horse owners attempting to mitigate articular inflammation in the horse through nutritional supplementation.

Outside of my educational experience, I have been involved with horses for most of my life through riding, competing, and working at stables. My passion for this animal motivates me to improve equine health and welfare through my studies.
