  2. MSc. Coursework (Animal Biosciences, UoG, Candidate)

Advisor:

Dr. Vern Osborne

Academics:

Last spring, 2021 I completed my BSc in Agriculture, majoring in Animal Science at the University of Guelph. During my undergraduate degree I took Dr. Vern Osborne’s Applied Environmental Physiology and Animal Housing course where I was able to learn about how to come up with out of the box strategies to provide optimal nutrition and housing based on physiological requirements of an animal. I became fascinated about creating new and innovative ways to improve housing and provide nutrition for animals, so I decided that I wanted to learn more. This led me to be a part of the Animal Biosciences department as a coursework based Masters student under the supervision of Dr. Osborne.

My major project and research paper will involve me working alongside Dr. Osborne to assist creating and developing a ‘nutrition wand’ for dairy cattle. The goal of the ‘nutrition wand’ will be to provide an enrichment tool that will stimulate oral fixation as well as a nutrient source (potentially a gel). Although, this project is still in the development and prototype stages we are hoping that when this wand is ready to be tested in dairy cattle housing systems it will promote welfare as well as nutrition. I look forward to the summer 2022 semester where my focus will be on assisting to develop this idea further.

About me:

Growing up with many pets in my family I always knew that I had a great interest in animals which lead me to pursue an undergraduate degree studying them. Throughout my time at the University of Guelph I have become passionate about animal nutrition and health in specific which ultimately drove me to pursue academia further.

If I am not at my desk or on campus studying, I am either with one of my 4 pets (2 dogs, a bird and bunny), friends or family. Some of my hobbies include reading and scrapbooking – I also, really enjoy skiing and water sports.
