Dr. Kaitlin Wurtz will be presenting her research on aggression in group-housed pigs and potential solutions to this important animal welfare issue. Dr. Wurtz is a research associate at Michigan State University where she works jointly with the Animal Behavior and Welfare Group and the Animal Breeding and Genetics group. Her ongoing research is assessing the current state of automated behavioral phenotyping using image analysis technology in order to improve the welfare of group-housed pigs. Dr. Wurtz obtained her PhD in 2017 from MSU in which she explored the underlying genetic components of agonistic behavioral traits in pigs. Overall, her research aims to improve the welfare of pigs through interdisciplinary collaboration and use of cutting edge technology.
