Maria Amélia has a major in Biological Sciences (1986); a MSc. in Cell Biology (1991) from the State University of Maringá, Brazil, and a DSc. - Genetics and Animal Breeding (2001) from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, with the thesis entitled "Study of the gene of obesity and its receptor in swine". She is a professor at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro since 2009 and develops research projects with molecular markers. In August 2018 she started a post-doctoral internship under the supervision of Prof. James Squires and Prof. Flavio Schenkel at the Department of Animal Bioscience at Guelph University, Canada.
