Luiz Brito has an honours bachelor’s degree in Animal Science (2010) and a Master of Science (2012) in Genetics and Animal Breeding from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil. He completed his Ph.D. in 2016 at The University of Guelph (Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Flávio Schenkel. His thesis title was “Genetics and Genomics in Small Ruminants” and he conducted part of his Ph.D. research in the Invermay Agricultural Centre – AgResearch (New Zealand) and at CSIRO (Australia). In September/2016, he started working as a Post-doctoral Researcher at The Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock (CGIL) at The University of Guelph, Canada.

He is currently working on the research projects: 1) “The Efficient Dairy Genome Project” (http://genomedairy.ualberta.ca/), which focus on genomics (and related areas) to allow selection of dairy cattle with improved feed efficiency and lower methane emissions and, 2) “Genetic Improvement of Canadian Lamb Carcass Yield, Quality and Growth Traits”. In addition, he is involved in other research projects in the areas of systems biology, genetics and genomics of small ruminants, beef and dairy cattle, horses, and pigs. His current mentors are Prof. Flávio SchenkelDr. Filippo Miglior and Prof. Angela Cánovas.

He is interested in a broad range of research areas such as quantitative genetics, genomics, and systems biology applied to a variety of traits of interest for livestock species. He strongly believes that engagement with other researchers and institutions is very important for his personal and professional development. Therefore, he has been very active in creating and strengthening collaborations with researchers from all around the world.

Luiz is also very passionate about scientific communication. He has recently joined the editorial board of the Brazilian Journal of Animal Science (Genetics and Animal Breeding section editor) and has served as a reviewer for many internationally recognized journals such as BMC Genomics, Journal of Dairy Science, Small Ruminant Research, and BMC Genetics. In addition, he has started to get involved in teaching activities at the university level. As he grew up in a farm, he fully understands the importance of science translation to producers and therefore, he has also interacted in many ways with producers/breeders by delivering presentations, writing extension articles and attending various conferences and extension events around the world.
