We offer this full-day educational workshop at the Alma Aquaculture Research Station. There is a charge of $125 plus HST for the program which includes: all lectures, a tour of the Research Station, coffee breaks and lunch.
Attendance is by pre-registration only, and there is NO registration at the door. All sessions start at 9:00 a.m. sharp and conclude at about 4:00 p.m. Plan to arrive a bit before 0900.

What is aquaculture and aquaponics, and what are the advantages of farming aquatic species? We'll examine aquaculture and the capture fishery, world aquaculture production and its future outlook; and consumer trends in seafood consumption.
The Canadian & Ontario Aquaculture Scene
An overview of aquaculture production in Canada and Ontario. What species are raised, and what is the economic impact to various regions in Canada. The history of the Ontario rainbow trout industry, and prospects for future development of other forms of fish farming.
Aquaculture Legislation and Regulations in Ontario
An analysis of municipal, provincial and federal regulations and legislation that affects aquaculture in Ontario including; why regulations are necessary, licenses that are required and what fish species can be raised.
Water Supplies
A discussion of the pros and cons of surface water vs. groundwater supplies, including spring, artesian and pumped sources. Water quality and quantity requirements for salmonid aquaculture and essential ingredients for managing water resources for fish production.
Land-Use Aspects
A look at some site considerations for assessing a properties suitability for aquaculture, including surrounding land uses, pollution effects, site topography and hydrogeology. Reproduction and Breeding
The techniques of reproducing salmonid fish in captivity with a discussion of the life history of the rainbow trout from egg incubation to final grow out.
Rearing Systems Technology
From ponds to raceways to cages to indoor recirculation. Various approaches to growing out fish to market size. Some of the new technologies such as liquid oxygen injection and recirculation systems are discussed.
Nutrition and Feeding
An overview of fish nutrition and the many different methods of feeding fish throughout their life cycle. Principles of feed handling and storage, feed costs and feeding efficiency of fish.
Transportation and Processing
The methods of transporting 5 or 5,000 pounds of live fish. What products can be sold. Overview of processing methods and requirements.
Constraints to Production. A look at some of the problems that a fish farmer can encounter - from predators to diseases to lightning strikes!
Economics and Marketing
An examination of the various market pathways for farmed fish and an overview of the costs of production and anticipated returns on investment. Risk factors for the aquaculture and aquaponics industry and a forecast for the sectors are presented.
Facilities Tour
See up close, a large-scale research farm raising rainbow trout, Arctic charr and sturgeon. From water supplies to waste management systems, you'll get a chance to view many of the bits and pieces discussed during the lecture sessions.
