Congratulations to the Nipissing Oldtimers for winning the
2018 tournament !
Final Standings for the 2018 Tournament:
The, 'University Faculty-Staff Invitational Hockey Tournament'
has been a 'mostly' annual event for the last 40 years, missing
only a season of play in 1999 and another in 2014. Beginning
in 1977, teams from across Ontario and Quebec have gathered for
some friendly competition on the ice, playing Canada's national
game. The event has been designed primarily for fun and
fellowship with our academic partners. The competitive level
of hockey is still fairly high - in spite of the fact that the
average age on the teams is now around 50.
Historically, the tournament was hosted by York University until
1997, when it moved to its current home at the University of
Guelph. The unique event guarantees that all teams play each
other at least once during the tournament, and a banquet dinner is
always included in the festivities.
The tournament is run with zero tolerance for fighting and intent
to injure penalties. The goal is to play spirited and
competitive hockey, but to try and avoid pointless injuries or
fighting which would spoil the purpose of the event. All
teams must come with their egos in check and their goons left at
home. Accordingly, the officiating is close to keep the
number of infractions as low as possible. The idea is to
play hockey ! Typically, 5 games are played by each team over 2
days, so a decent level of physical fitness is essential to fully
enjoy this tournament.
The event is usually held during the University of Guelph's
reading week, which is the 3rd week in February most years.
The University of Guelph has a modern, twin pad arena complex with
a restaurant and bar, small hockey equipment shop and most
importantly, a Tim Horton's outlet right in the rink! Ample hotel
and motel accommodations are available in the City of Guelph for
teams traveling and requiring overnight stay. Numerous sport
shops are also abundant, and our main corporate sponsor, 'The
Hockey Shop-Source for Sports', carries a complete range of medium
to high end equipment that has something for everyone. They
also do skate and equipment repairs if needed.

Each game will be a single 42 minute period with the last 2 minutes stop time if the score is a 1 or 2 goal difference. In order to accommodate a 3 minute warm up, and to ensure we stay on schedule, the game clock will be set to 45 minutes and will start at the top of the hour. It is the responsibility of the teams and the refs to ensure the game starts and the puck drop occurs as close to the 42 minute mark as possible.
Flood at the end of every game. All games to be played on the Red Rink.
