Hello CGIL,
We are happy to have Dr. Roberto Carvalheiro, from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), presenting for us on Friday, November 21st, 2025. The seminar will begin at 1:30 PM EDT/EST on the virtual platform Microsoft Teams. The presentation title is: “The Power of Genomics in Aquaculture Breeding”
Speaker Biography: Dr. Roberto Carvalheiro is a Principal Research Scientist in Aquaculture Applied Breeding at CSIRO, based in Hobart, Australia. He holds a BSc in Animal Science from the Federal University of Lavras (1998), and MSc (2000) and PhD (2004) degrees in Animal Breeding and Genetics from São Paulo State University (UNESP). Part of his doctoral research was conducted at the University of Guelph, Canada, in 2002-2003.
With over two decades of experience, Dr. Carvalheiro has worked extensively in animal breeding, quantitative genetics, and genomics. From 2004 to 2013, he served as a consultant at GenSys in Brazil, where he played a key role in implementing genomic selection in commercial beef cattle breeding programs. He later joined UNESP as a senior researcher (2013–2022), and in 2018, undertook a sabbatical as a visiting scientist at the University of Queensland.
Since 2022, Dr. Carvalheiro has led research at CSIRO focused on applying genomics to commercial aquaculture breeding programs, collaborating closely with industry partners. His work aims to develop sustainable breeding strategies and translate complex data into practical solutions for the livestock and aquaculture sectors.
He has authored over 150 scientific publications, supervised numerous graduate students, and delivered more than 50 invited talks at academic, scientific, and industry events.
Information to attend: To join this seminar, please ensure you have downloaded the Microsoft Teams application to your computer or join the meeting online using the web browser version of Microsoft Teams. Please join the meeting with your microphone on mute and the camera turned off.
