Purpose: A brief introduction to the structure of the hind quarter bones and muscles.

Lumbar vertebrae (with wing-like transverse process)
Sacral vertebrae (fused together)
Caudal vertebrae (simple vertebrae of tail)
Pelvis - composed of ilium, ischium and pubis
Femur
Patella - knee cap
Tibia (large) and fibula (small)
Tarsals - hock
Metatarsals (3 & 4 fused to form ruminant cannon bone)
3 phalanges in each digit
Longissimus dorsi - runs through ribs and loin, ends on ilium
Gluteus medius - adjacent to ilium
Psoas major - runs ventral to vertebral transverse processes
Iliacus muscle - joins psoas major
Iliopsoas = iliacus + psoas major
Multifidus dorsi - between LD and dorsal spines of vertebrae
Longissimus costarum - next to rib-eye area
Biceps femoris - 2-headed muscle on lateral surface of leg
Tensor fascia lata - sirloin muscle that tightens a fascia
Gracilis - flat, medial muscle of leg
Sartorius - flat strap, anterior to gracilis
Rectus femoris - anterior in leg
Vastus medialis, intermedius and lateralis - also pull on patella
Pectineus, adductor and semimembranosus - difficult to separate
Semitendinosus - lateral, back of leg, next to semimembranosus
Gastrocnemius - calf muscle
