  EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Throughout the ‘Extension’ part of my career, I have personally developed and implemented a wide range of services and programs tailored to transferring knowledge and technical information to a variety of end user groups, with special emphasis on the agri-farming community in Ontario.  Examples of these initiatives are given below and include, but are not limited to:
bullet Program Initiatives
bullet Responsible for the design, construction and operations of the Alma Aquaculture Research Station, which included significant components and programs dedicated to extension education and training.  See more about Alma at: http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/aquacentre/aars/aars.html

Mediation Services

As a trained mediator in alternate dispute resolution, I have provided liaison between farmers and regulatory agencies, as well as other groups, in an attempt to resolve various types of disputes.  Although this is an unusual type of ‘Extension’ service, it has been a valuable problem-solving and enabling skill, helping clients work through impediments to production and farm operations.

WEBSITE and ELECTRONIC MEDIA

Aquaculture Website Development

I established and continue to refine our 'Aquaculture Centre', extension services Website which allows access to a variety of materials currently produced by the Aquaculture Centre. The website was designed to highlight our extension, research, educational and facilities infrastructure at UG, and is dedicated to the Ontario aquaculture industry. View the site at http://www.aps.uoguelph.ca/aquacentre/index.html

Aquatalk Information Bulletins

In collaboration with the Office of Research, UG, I developed the very popular, 'AQUATALK' series of research bulletins. I have been Executive Editor for 10 issues of 'AQUATALK', a publication of the Aquaculture Program at the University of Guelph.  These bulletins have won the following awards for excellence. 'The Felix Schmaltz Award 2002-Bronze Medal, Best Periodical, Canadian Farm Writers' Federation, for Aquatalk Edition, 2002. 'The Felix Schmaltz Award 2001-Silver Medal, Best Periodical, Canadian Farm Writers' Federation, for Aquatalk Edition, 2001.

AquaNews - An Electronic Information Distribution List:

In 1999, I established an Aquaculture Centre electronic email distribution list, called, 'AquaNews'.  This listserv is used to send timely and relevant information on various issues to farmers, private sector consultants, researchers, government specialists and many others.  Several times each week, I package newspaper articles, press releases and other short information pieces for email distribution. This service is free-of-charge.

E-Answer Service

Each year, I respond to several hundred email inquiries regarding the aquaculture industry.  Many of these are from farmers who require technical information or trouble-shooting services related to their fish culture operations.  I also deal with various types of industry-related inquiries from consumer groups, teachers, students, government agencies and others.  This is an extension outreach service that is designed to promote rapid information exchange.

bullet EXTENSION PRESENTATIONS

Over 150 extension presentations and seminars have been given to a wide variety of audiences from consumer groups, to bankers associations, and many different types of aquaculture client groups.

bullet WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS ORGANIZED

I have organized and presented over 100 general or specialized workshops and seminars for both public and private aquaculture groups. The following is a brief list of recent workshops offered. Several new programs are currently in development.
