INTERNATIONAL CONSULTING EXPERIENCE
- 1992 -1996. Evaluation of reproductive performance and management
of the Thai-Canadian Dairy Project, located at the National Dairy Research and
Training Institute, Chiang Mai, Thailand. This program consisted of designing
and assisting in execution of research projects to identify major constraints
and to develop practical solutions for managing exotic dairy cattle in tropical
environments. Several visits were made each year to Thailand, to collaborate
with counterpart scientists the collection, analysis and summarization of data.
One Canadian and several Thai graduate students were also involved in this
research work. Although the CIDA supported project concluded in 1995, personal
involvement continued as a consultant on curriculum development for the newly
established veterinary faculty at Chiang Mai University and as advisor to
several commercial livestock organizations in south-east Asia.
- 1996. FAO\IAEA consultant at the faculty of agronomy at the
Universidad de la Frontera, Temuco, and the veterinary faculty Universidad de
Conceptión, Chillán, Chile (3 weeks). The terms of reference for
this mission included discussing the available technology for the manipulation
of reproductive function in dairy and beef cattle. The activities while in
Chile involved helping counterparts with execution and interpretation of data
from "on-farm" field trials for improving milk production and reproductive
performance. Other duties included participating in a national workshop on
livestock endocrinology and a symposium on livestock production, and advising
FAO/IAEA on future training and equipment requirements.
- 1994. FAO\IAEA consultant at the Atomic Energy Agency, Damascus,
Syrian Arab Republic (3 weeks). This mission involved training counterpart
staff in use of the new solid-phase radioimmunoassay procedure for measurement
of progesterone concentration in blood or milk, and developing a work plan to
use this technology in applied research projects.
- 1993. Participated in the Final Research Co-ordination Meeting for
the FAO/IAEA coordinated research program to improve livestock productivity
throughout Latin America. The results collected by participating scientists
were prepared for publication and the discussions summarized findings for
future use in extension programs. (Piracicaba, Brazil, one week).
- 1992. Participated in an intensive FAO/IAEA training course for
African research scientists at International Livestock Centre for Africa
(ILCA), Addis Ababa, covering experimental design, project execution and
preparation of scientific manuscripts (2 weeks).
- 1991. FAO/IAEA consultant, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,
Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda (4 weeks). This mission involved assisting
counterpart staff in analysis and interpretation of research data collected
under the coordinated research project, advising on planning of further
multi-disciplinary studies to improve productivity of indigenous livestock and
recommending on further inputs required.
- 1991. Participated in a regional research planning and progress
evaluation meeting in Mexico City for the FAO/IAEA co-ordinated research
programs to improve livestock productivity throughout Latin America (one week).
- 1990. FAO/IAEA consultant, Faculty of Veterinary Science,
University of Khartoum, Sudan, assisting research scientists in analysis and
interpretation of results and formulating future experimental trials with
cattle and camels (3 weeks).
- 1991. An invited speaker and resource person at an FAO/IAEA Animal
Production and Health Symposium held in Harare, Zimbabwe (one week). The main
presentation reviewed use of radioisotope methods in animal production research
projects.
- 1991. FAO/IAEA consultant at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,
Sokoine Agricultural University, Morogoro, Tanzania (4 weeks). Duties included
reviewing the current progress, evaluating results and advising on future
research programs.
- 1989. FAO/IAEA consultant at Zhejiang Agricultural University,
Hangchow, China (4 weeks). This visit included presentation of a series of
lectures on The Application of Nuclear Technique in Animal Production Research.
Considerable time was spent discussing the general technical co-operation
project framework with the Chinese scientists. Emphasis was on the need for
establishing specific objectives, comprehensive planning and communications and
suggesting new opportunities for expanded research involving collaboration
between the Chinese Nuclear Institute and the veterinary or animal science
faculties at Zhejiang Agricultural University.
- 1989. FAO/IAEA consultant at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine,
Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania, evaluating results,
assessing laboratory methodology and advising on future areas for
investigation, equipment needs, training, and safety precautions (6 weeks).
- 1988-1993. Scientific advisor to the FAO/IAEA Joint Section for
Animal Production and Health coordinated research program to improve livestock
production and reproduction in Latin America.
- 1988. FAO representative on the in-depth evaluation mission of the
UNDP/FAO Philippines Carabao Research and Development Project, Phase II (3
weeks).
- 1988. Resident advisor at the International Foundation for
Science, Stockholm, Sweden. This assignment involved revising application
guidelines to emphasize sections covering research planning and execution (5
weeks).
- 1988. FAO/IAEA Consultant at research stations or universities in
Piracicaba, Belem and Sao Paulo (3 weeks). Duties during this mission involved
working with the local scientists in analyzing and preparing experimental data
for presentation at a research co-ordination meeting and for subsequent
publication.
- 1987. Joint FAO/IAEA Animal Production and Health Section, Vienna.
Member of expert group advising on future directions for livestock production
research (one week).
- 1987 - 1989. External Assessor for Professional Appointments and
graduate theses in the faculties of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine,
University of Agriculture Malaysia.
- 1987. FAO/IAEA Animal Production Consultant to the Livestock and
Pest Research Center operated by the National Council for Scientific Research,
Zambia (5 weeks). Terms of reference were to assess past performance and advise
the Research Centre, Council and Government of Zambia on future strategies to
develop animal production in the traditional sector.
- 1986. Invited speaker at the international symposium on Nuclear
and Related Techniques in Animal Production and Health, sponsored by FAO/IAEA,
Vienna (one week). The oral presentation and published text reviewed my
research on postpartum reproductive function in dairy and beef cows with
emphasis on the practical applications and implications for production oriented
projects in developing countries.
- 1985. Participated in the Department of External Affairs mission
to Feria de la Industria Porcina, Valencia, Venezuela, Oct. 2-6, 1985 (one
week). This mission included discussions with local livestock producers and a
presentation on Reproductive Efficiency of Sows at their technical symposium.
- 1985. FAO/IAEA Animal Production Section consultant to the
Reproductive Biology Unit, University of Nairobi, Kenya, advising research
units and government on opportunities and methods to increase
production-oriented livestock development research (6 weeks).
- 1984. Invited scientist at IAEA Applications Laboratory
(Seibersdorf, Austria) initiating development of a solid phase radioimmunoassay
for progesterone that will work reliably under less than ideal conditions in
developing countries (5 weeks).
- 1983. FAO/IAEA consultant to the National Dairy Research
Institute, Karnal, India, to review current projects and to advise on the
direction for their future dairy physiology research program (5 weeks).
- 1982. FAO/IAEA consultant to the National Science and Research
Council and Government of Zambia to outline a research and development program
to determine major causes of poor reproductive performance and devise practical
solutions (6 weeks).
- 1980-1985. Scientific advisor to the FAO/IAEA Joint Section for
Animal Production and Health coordinated research program to improve livestock
production and reproduction in Asia and Africa.
- 1979-81. External Examiner, Faculty of Agriculture, University of
the West Indies.
- 1979. CIDA consultant on dairy development in India feasibility
study (4 weeks). Team members assessed artificial insemination, animal health,
breeding and forage development projects to determine where and how future
Canadian aid might be applied.
- 1978. FAO/UNESCO consultant to advise on postgraduate education
and research programs at the National Dairy Research Institute centers in India
(5 weeks). This assignment was a follow-up mission in response to the initial
visit made in 1973.
- 1974. CIDA consultant reviewing prospects for dairy development
projects in India (4 weeks).
- 1973. FAO/UNESCO consultant to the National Dairy Research
Institute, Karnal, India (4 months). The direct involvement included working
with local counterparts to establish research projects on freezing water
buffalo semen and inducing lactation in barren females. Other functions
included reviewing animal production research projects at Karnal and other NDRI
sub-centers throughout the country, teaching a short course on reproductive
physiology to graduate students and suggesting revisions to both the graduate
and undergraduate curricula.
