Dr. Andy Robinson, an Associate Professor at CGIL, will present a CGIL Seminar on Friday, April 5th. The seminar will begin at 1:30 pm in room 141 of the Animal Science & Nutrition building.
The Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock welcomes all interested University of Guelph staff, faculty, students, and industry or academic collaborators to attend our CGIL Seminars, which are held on Friday afternoons throughout the Fall and Winter semesters. The meetings are always available remotely via Fuze, for those unable to attend in person, and presentation recordings may also be available after the seminar. Andy came to Guelph from Owen Sound, Ontario and graduated in the class of OAC ’80 in Animal Science. He continued on to an M.Sc. degree in Animal Breeding from Guelph and a Ph.D. degree in Animal Breeding, minoring in Computer Science and Statistics, from Cornell University. Andy spent 7 years at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada developing and running the national animal model genetic evaluations for dairy cattle production traits before joining Ontario Swine Improvement and later Beef Improvement Ontario in the 1990s. Andy joined CGIL as an adjunct faculty member in 1994 and in 1998 became a research scientist running the national dairy conformation evaluations. When John Gibson took leave from his swine genetics position in 2000, Andy became a contract faculty member, transitioning to a permanent member of the faculty in 2003. Andy has also been Grad Coordinator and Department Chair in the past. On the side, he practices his craft by breeding miniature donkeys with a modest herd of 10 and both his kids are now OAC grads, one in An Bio and one in Ag Biz. Following his term as department chair, Andy accepted a greater teaching role and currently teaches parts of 3 courses and all of 2 more courses, most relevant for today’s presentation, Andy teaches 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year undergraduate genetics courses.
