CGIL Seminar: "Principles of Selection in Animal Breeding Journal Club -1"

Date and Time

Location

ANNU 141

Details

The students of Dr. Angela Cánovas' graduate course: Principles of Selection in Animal Breeding (ANSC*6210), will be presenting short reviews of recent journal articles during the CGIL seminars on March 1st and March 15th. As usual, the CGIL Seminars will be held from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm in ANNU 141. References for the journal articles are provided and members of CGIL and the Department of Animal Biosciences are invited to join the journal club to ask questions and learn about recent advancements in genetic selection research.

Week 1 Schedule (March 1st):

Symposium review: Possibilities in an age of genomics: The future of selection indices
Audrey Martin

Audrey A.A. Martin has a degree in Biotechnology from the Université Lyon (France), a B.Sc. in Animal Breeding from Université de Limoges (France), and a M.Sc. in Genetics and Biodiversity from Wageningen University and Research (Netherlands). Audrey joined CGIL to work on the Efficient Dairy Genome Project with Dr. Filippo Miglior and stayed on the project to complete a Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Flavio Schenkel. Today she will be presenting the 2018 review by Cole and VanRaden titled Possibilities in an age of genomics: The future of selection indices.

The SLICK Hair Locus Derived from Senepol-cattle Confers Thermotolerance to Intensively Managed Lactating Holstein Cows
Paige Rockett

Paige Rockett is an M.Sc. student studying dairy cattle breeding and genetics under the supervision of Dr. Flavio Schenkel. Paige will be presenting the paper entitled, The SLICK hair locus derived from Senepol-cattle confers thermotolerance to intensively managed lactating Holstein cows by Dikmen et al., published in 2014.

Detection of Selection Signatures for Agonistic Behaviour in Cattle
Camila Rosenberg

Camila obtained her B.Sc. with Honours in Animal Biology in 2018 from the University of Guelph. She is currently a masters student working on identifying potential phenotypic traits related to fertility in dairy cattle under the supervision of Dr. Christine Baes. Today, Camila will be presenting the 2018 paper by Eusebi et al., Detection of selection signatures for agonistic behaviour in cattle.

The Centre for Genetic Improvement of Livestock welcomes all interested University of Guelph staff, faculty, students, and industry or academic collaborators to attend our CGIL Seminars, which are held on  Friday afternoons throughout the Fall and Winter semesters. The meetings are always available remotely via Fuze, for those unable to attend in person, and presentation recordings may also be available after the seminar. Please let me know if you need further instruction on how to connect to Fuze or view available webinar recordings.

Have a great week!
