The CCSAW Student Chapter is happy to have Dr. Lisa Kramer come in and talk about the limitations of animal models in predicting human responses to drugs and diseases. Lisa Kramer is Professor at the University of Toronto and has previously been a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Psychology at Stanford University and at the Rady School of Management at the University of California San Diego. She completed her PhD in financial economics at the University of British Columbia. She conducts interdisciplinary research spanning a wide range of fields, including behavioral economics, investments, and business ethics. Her research has been published in a wide disciplinary range of journals including the American Economic Review, Social Psychological and Personality Science, the Journal of Animal Ethics, and Business and Society Review, and her work has been profiled in popular press outlets such as the National Post, the Globe and Mail, the Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post.

A few words about her talk, “The empirical and theoretical evidence show that, when used to predict human responses to drugs and diseases, animal modeling is overall ineffective, misleading to scientists, unable to prevent the development of dangerous drugs, and prone to interfere with the development of useful drugs. From the perspective of the many stakeholders of the drug development enterprise, we will consider the view that the industry currently falls far short of its potential due in large part to the use of animal models”.

We hope to see you there!
